Sunday, February 7, 2010

Surendra Singh Rathod shot his way to the record books, scoring 1172 in the 50m rifle three position which earned him his third gold as
Indian shooters clinched both the gold medals up for grab in the 11th South Asian Games on Sunday.

India pocketed two gold and one bronze on the concluding day of shooting to sign off with 19-9-5.

Having ascertained his supremacy in the 50m rifle three positions (3x40) individual event where he also bettered his national record of 1170, Rathod clinched his fourth gold in the ongoing SAG when Team India stood tall with 3455 points.

Hariom Singh and Devesh Panwar were the other two members of the Indian team that clinched the 50m rifle three positions gold.

The Army man, Rathod, who hails from Mehsana District in Gujarat, had earlier bagged two gold medals -- individual and team -- in the 50m rifle pistol event also with a record score of 593.

Another Army shooter Om Prakash had four gold medals (10m air pistol and 50m air pistol -- individual and team) to his name in the South Asian Games here.

At the National Shooting Complex range in Gulshan, about 10kms from here, Abdulla Helbaki of Bangladesh shot 1148 for the individual silver medal, while two points adrift, India's Hariom (1146) settled for the bronze.

A total of 3455, including Panwar's 1137, meant India claimed the gold ahead of Bangladesh (3434) and Pakistan (3353).

"We excelled in all events despite the fact that we fielded a second-rung side. It's a wonderful sign for Indian shooters who will have a packed schedule this year," India coach Tejinder Singh Dhillon said.

Besides the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, Indian shooters will have two World Cups, Commonwealth shooting championship and the quadrennial World championship this year.
