Monday, February 15, 2010
(PTI) Nalini, undergoing life term in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has said she has not given her consent to a private TV channel to interview her. In a telegram to her advocate Radhakrishnan, Nalini said "I did not give any consent to any media in writ petition, I yearn to live only for my daughter."
New Delhi Television Ltd, in a petition filed in the Madras High Court today sought a direction to the Superintendent of Special Prison for Women at Vellore to permit the channel to interview Nalini.
The petition filed on behalf of the channel by its senior correspondent J Sam Daniel Stalin sought quashing of an order issued by the Prison Superintendent denying permission to him to interview Nalini.
The petitioner pointed out that both the print and visual media have been airing divergent views supporting and objecting to Nalini's premature release. The media was rife with speculation that the Prison Advisory Board had recommended Nalini be released on the ground of good conduct.
The channel contended that the superintendent had refused permission for the interview without assigning any reason beyond stating that the Jail Rules only permit interview with relatives, friends and legal advisors of an inmate.
