Maha Shivratree SMS|Shiva-Parvati |Shivratree|hindu Lord Shiva|Maha Shivaratri 2010|Shivaratri Pooja |Somnath Temple|Rameshwaram Temple
Shivaratri is celebrated on the 6th night of the dark Phalgun (Feb or March) every year. On the auspicious day, devotees observe fast and keep vigil all night. Mahashivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the 'Tandava'. It is also believed that on this day Lord Shiva was married to Parvati Ma. On this day Shiva devotees observe fast and offer fruits, flowers and bel leaves on Shiva Linga.
Maha Shivratree means the grand night of Shiva. Obviously ceremonies take place on a moonless night during the Krishna Paksha in the hindu month of paigun. Just to clarify the hindi terms, Krishna Paksha means dark fortnight of Palguna (month of February) and this is the reason for celebrating Maha Shivratree in February.
Maha Shivratree is observed in the honor of the hindu Lord Shiva who was married to Maa Parvati on this particular day.
Shiva Lord of Dance
Maha Shivratree is the night where Lord Shiva performed the violent dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction known as Tandava.
Shiva the Lord of Lords
It is believed that Lord Vishnu and Lord Bramha argued over each other divine powers and Lord Shiva challenged both entities. Lord Shiva metamorphosed as the flaming Linga and neither Lord Vishnu nor Lord Bramha could measure the phenomenal linga. Lord Shiva came out of the linga and declared himself as the most powerful. Thus, Maha Shivratree means the grand night of Shiva.
Shiva-Parvati
Shiva marriage with Sati was opposed by King Daksha. Followed by a holy sacrifice (yagnya) King Daksha ignored Lord Shiva and the insult was unbearable by Sati. In a gesture of extreme anger Sati jumped into the sacrificial fire. Upon the death of his beloved, Shiva unleashed his fury and performed the Tandava. Gods then feared the end of the universe and revived Sati as a new avatar of Maa Parvati. Shiva- Parvati union is celebrated on Maha Shivratree.
