The state government will oppose the Foreign University Bill that was cleared today by the Union Cabinet. In principle the CPM has already opposed the Bill saying it would lead to commercialisation and privatisation of education.
Subimal Sen, vice-chairman, West Bengal Council of Higher Education, said the state government has earlier conveyed its reservations on the Bill and is not ready to accept it in any form.
“The Yashpal Committee has recommended that skilled faculty from foreign countries can teach in our educational institutions. It said the institutes cannot take the profit home. By allowing the universities to carry profit home, the Centre has gone against the recommendations from its own committee,” said Sen.
In the Bill, the universities have been allowed to carry profit from consultancies and technology developed but cannot corner profit from academic activities.
