The Pakistan High Commission has denied tennis star Sania Mirza a visa for Sialkot, the home town of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik where a reception (Valima) was to be held after the couple’s marriage.

Sania has only got visa for Lahore and Karachi following which the reception is likely to be shifted to Lahore.

Census-2011 to be launched today

To create a comprehensive identity database in the country, the Government will launch Census-2011 here today.

The census operation, to be formally launched by President Pratibha Patil, would cover 1.2 billion residents of the country living in all 35 states and Union Territories.

It will be an endeavour to compile the National Population Register (NPR), based on biometric information in which photos of all residents above 15 years old will be featured.

The 2011 Census will also be the forerunner to the launching of the national Unique Identity Number (UID) that is being conceptualized by former Infosys head Nandan Nilekini.

Home Secretary G K Pillai has said after completion of the exercise, the largest census to be attempted in the history of mankind, a National Population Register (NPR) will be created in which the government will have the entire population of the country in one database.

"Once the NPR is completed we will have the photographs of the entire population. First time we will be able to have specific information about the entire usual residents of the country," he added.

The whole exercise will be conducted in two phases. The first phase from April to September this year will involve house listing and housing census. The second phase will involve population enumeration, which will be carried out between February 9 and 28 next year.

No links between Pak Army, ISI and Headley : ISPR

Keywords- Pak Army, Headley , ISPR , Pakistan Army, ISI, David Coleman Headley

The Pakistan Army has denounced reports that David Coleman Headley, a Lashkar operative who has been charged with scouting targets for the 2008 Mumbai attacks, had named three Pakistan Army and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) officials for their direct involvement in the 26/11 attacks.

A statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) termed the report as false and fabricated, and said that they were aimed at maligning the image of the Pakistan Army and the ISI.

“There is absolutely no link or connection between the army, ISI and David Headley,” The Daily Times quoted the statement, as saying.

The report appears to be part of an overall design with a malicious intent to bring disrepute to Pakistan’s national security organisations, the statement added.

Headley had pleaded guilty to all the 12 charges of conspiracy involving bombing public places in India and providing material support to foreign terrorist plots and Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), besides aiding and abetting the murder of six US citizens in the Mumbai attacks.

Headley, 49, has been cooperating with U.S. investigators since his arrest in October and faces up to life imprisonment.

Headley had promised to cooperate and provide testimony in exchange for a pledge that he would not be extradited to India, Pakistan or Denmark. (ANI)

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah and Leader of Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu appealed to the people to observe discipline following reports of fresh clashes.

It has been reported that at least eight persons, including two cops were injured as protestors'' pelted stones during a Hanuman Jayanti procession that led to communal clashes in new areas of the city.

Meanwhile, the Central Government has deployed over 1800 troops in sensitive areas to maintain law and order.

Karnataka legislators demand probe into tax fraud, 'obscene' dance in IPL

They have demanded an investigation against IPL for alleged tax evasion. They have also criticised obscene dances by cheerleaders and the ‘neglect’ of Kannada during the matches held in Bangalore on March 16 and 18.

What really ticked the legislators off was that the IPL’s organisers and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had issued them cheap Rs49 passes to watch the first match. They called this a “humiliation”.

IPL’s organisers clarified that the passes were meant for VIPs only. But it was priced just Rs49 to save on the tax. The legislators are now accusing the IPL of tax evasion and have demanded an investigation against its organisers and the KSCA.

“The IPL organisers have admitted through their clarification that they have undervalued tickets to evade tax” JD(U)’s leader in legislative council MP Nadagouda said on Wednesday. “They are evading tax on tickets given to the legislators. What will be the magnitude of tax being evaded on tickets sold to others?” BJP member Mukhyamantri Chandru said.

They took serious exception to thestatement reportedly made by the IPL’s organisers that the legislators were making baseless allegations because they faced problems in obtaining the passes. “This amounts to a breach of privilege of legislators and is an insult,” Chandru said. He demanded that the chairman of the legislative council refer the issue to the privileges committee to take appropriate action against the IPL and KSCA authorities. Chandru and Gouda said they had written to the chairman seeking action against them.

They said the IPL was just business and not a sporting event. Liquor was sold during matches, cheerleaders’ dances were obscene, and Kannada was neglected in the stadium, they said. They wanted a detailed probe into all these issues.

Sachin will always be my favourite - Sania

I think a husband is different to my favorite cricketer, Sachin is my favourite cricketer and will always be," India's tennis ace told NDTV's Barkha Dutt in an exclusive interview.

Her decision to marry a Pakistani cricketer has created quite a stir. Some even hope the coming together of two sporting icons of India and Pakistan will improve ties between two nations. Others wonder why Sania couldn't find an Indian match for her.

The 23-year-old says the two young sportsmen "didn't really think whether we are going to make a political change or anything". "I mean today I am as much an Indian as I was yesterday even before I took the decision to marry Shoaib and he is also as much Pakistani as he was yesterday...I am going to keep playing for India, India is my country and it will always remain so".

She also makes clear that when India and Pakistan play, "Of course I will, I will always support India no matter what especially if Sachin is playing, I will support Sachin."

She does add, "I am sure Shoaib will have a fight with me after this interview but still..."

Siamese Twins Conjoined at the Hips to be Separated | Delhi Doctors to separate Siamese twins

Conjoined twins, also known as Siamese twins, Seeta and Geeta have separate heads, hands and legs, but are joined at the hip, having just one anus making surgery risky. Their parents are from Motihari district of Bihar, and have a tough time eking out a living.

Though doctors in Patna could not operate on the twins given the grave risk involved, they did refer them to the Batra Hospital for help, while Dr Ajay Kumar, a neurosurgeon at a Patna hospital decided to bear the cost of the surgery, which would be approximately Rs.5-6 Lakhs, though it is believed that Batra Hospital will bear half the expense.

But the chances of a successful operation are slight, since it is a complicated procedure as only one anal tract can be provided post-operation which would leave one of them at grave risk, so the medical team will have to create a urinary and intestinal diversion and reconstruct the pelvis and hip.

The head of pediatrics department at Batra Hospital, Dr S. Bagai, said, "The lower parts of their spines are very close but the proximity is towards the terminal parts.”

The conjoined twins have undergone preliminary medical tests at Batra Hospital. The tests are considered crucial in determining their chances of survival after the surgery, which generally are around 25% depending on the organs conjoined. Separating the two will require a multidisciplinary team of specialists like pediatric surgeons, orthopedics, plastic surgeons and other specialists.

1411 number of Tigers

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

What does this number mean? It is the number of Tigers found in India at the time of the last census carried out about 4 years ago. It was close to 20,000 about a century ago and due to the untiring efforts of mankind, these majestic beasts are close to extinction! I have been fascinated by these carnivores for years, would trade anything to spend quality time watching them roam the jungles, on television ofcourse. The priviledge of seeing them alive in their natural habitat is a luxury I can ill afford, given my poor finances. The last time I saw them was at the Dehiwala Zoo, from a height of about 50 feet and they seemed quite uninterested of being observed. A photograph depicting the triumphant(?) Indian Rulers and their European counterparts with the carcasses of atleast 20 tigers is still vivid in my memory. If they were that brave I wondered, they could have countered the poor 'national' animal unarmed. Later, the poachers took over from where they left, but it was for gain rather than a show of bravery. Life in the jungles itself was tough for them, given the hardships they had to face with regards to finding food and raring their offsprings. Man only compounded their misery, greed would one day have to pay a price no doubt, but then when that day arrives there may not be anything alive, barring videos and photos. However much the environmentalists tried, they were never really supported by succeeding governments , hell bent on hanging onto power at any cost. What can the individual do to prevent such atrocities? At this point of time it looks like keeping the fingers crossed, hoping for sanity to dawn on his damned race. Save the Tiger, please....

Next month, the Indo-Pak match: Sania to wed Shoaib

Monday, March 29, 2010

Shoaib Malik, Sania Mirza, Indo-Pak match, engagement,

Two months after she called off her engagement, tennis star Sania Mirza is all set to tie the knot with Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik.

Confirming the news on his Twitter account late Monday night, Malik wrote: “The news of me marrying Sania is true. Inshallah, will get married in April.”

While the Mirzas refused to confirm or deny the development, the Malik family spoke about the possible wedding date.

“Yes, the news is confirmed. Shoaib will be marrying Sania, most likely some time in the first week of April,” Imran Zafar, Malik’s brother-in-law, told The Indian Express from Lahore. “Ceremonies will be held both in India and Pakistan. There will be a reception in Lahore in the second or third week of April,” he said.

Sania and Malik met in Dubai recently and this was followed by the two families giving them the approval to get married.

In an interview, Malik had said that he intended to get married this year. “You will soon get some good news but it depends on my family.”

Sania and Malik are likely to settle down in Dubai — Malik holds a UAE passport. This move probably factors in Sania’s tennis career as well.

Malik, incidentally, was involved in a legal battle with another Hyderabad girl, Ayesha Siddiqui, in 2008. She had alleged that Malik married her over phone in 2002 and demanded a legal divorce.

Sania had been engaged to childhood friend Sohrab for seven months before calling it off, citing “incompatibility”.

Malik has been banned for one year by the PCB for poor performance and indiscipline during Pakistan’s recent tour of Australia. He has appealed the ban.

Ravi Shankar to address BJP workers in city today

Friday, March 26, 2010

Former Union minister and BJP's national spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad, who figures in the Nitin Gadkari team of office-bearers as the party's general secretary, is arriving here on Saturday.

Ravi Shankar, who is the first leader from the state to figure as the party's national general secretary, would later address the party workers at the state unit's headquarters.

Incidentally, Ravi Shankar is arriving in a peculiar atmosphere within the party, when the dissidents and other sections within the state unit have pointed to the lacuna and lapses in the Gadkari team.

They, however, have made open their points of view remaining largely anonymous, even as mediapersons have used their off-the-record observations to give the impression that the House of the state BJP is not in order.

At least 24 persons are feared dead and 20 injured in a massive fire at an iconic building on Kolkata's Park Street. The fire was finally brought under control after four hours.

The fire at Stephen Court building began at around 2.30 pm. As many as four persons jumped to escape one of the worst blaze in the city and scores were trapped.

As many as 300 firemen and 40 fire tenders and snorkels were sent to fight the blaze, which originated from one of the lifts between the fifth and sixth floors of the building, said Fire Services minister Pratim Chatterjee. An electrical fault is suspected to have caused the fire.

As a thick smoke engulfed the building, firemen put up ladders to rescue the trapped people who had scrambled out from windows on ledges of the building. Several people also clung to the ledges of the building before they were rescued.

Stephen Court, located in the heart of the city, houses the iconic 100-year-old Flury's confectionery house, a popular restaurant called Peter Cat, a large music store called Music World and several other offices.

George Bailey Profile

An important man in Tasmania's middle order for the past few seasons, George Bailey added the captaincy to his list of responsibilities for 2009-10. He had been the deputy under Daniel Marsh for three seasons and it was no surprise, when Marsh stepped down, that Bailey was named as his successor. In his first season as full-time captain he led the Tigers to the FR Cup title and, having been the competition's second-top scorer with 538 runs at 59.77 including his first century, was called into Australia's ODI squad for the Chappell-Hadlee Series in March 2010. Bailey had long been viewed as a future international prospect and had been given extra state responsibility back in 2006-07, when Marsh tore his calf late in the season and Bailey guided the Tigers to two important wins before giving the reins back to Marsh for the historic final triumph. Another consistent summer in 2008-09 brought Bailey 673 Sheffield Shield runs at 37.38, following on from his 734 runs the previous season. His reliability that season earned him a spot on the Australia A tour of India in late 2008 and he also won an IPL deal with the Chennai Super Kings.

Passengers onboard the Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express had a miraculous escape when seven of its coaches and the engine derailed near Gaya station following an explosion triggered by suspected Maoists late on Monday night, police said.

There was no casualty or serious injury, Gaya district Superintendent of Police Sushil Khopde said, adding none of the derailed bogies fell on its side which possibly was the reason why no casualty took place.

Sanjay Saraogi, a passenger of the D-3 coach, one of the seven derailed bogies, told PTI that none of the passengers were harmed in the incident.

"We heard the sound of a blast, but to my knowledge no harm has been caused to the passengers in the affected bogies," he said from the spot, about 15 km from Gaya station.

Tracks blown away, train traffic hit

Suspected Maoists tonight blew up railway tracks between Kokpara and Dalbhumgarh railway stations in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district as part of their 48-hour bandh in seven states.

South Eastern Railway sources said the ultras triggered an explosion at about 11.30 pm damaging the tracks, disrupting railway traffic in Kharagpur section.

While 2810 up Howrah-Mumbai Mail has been stranded at Chakulia, all Howrah bound down trains would be regulated at stations like Tatanagar, the sources said

IPL franchises will recover their money: Modi

Sunday, March 21, 2010

Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi did not expect today's bidding to generate an amount so staggering but he assured the franchise owners that there is no reason why they cannot make profit.

Sahara (USD 370 million) and Rendezvous (USD 333.33 million) paid a total of USD 703 million -- nearly Rs 3,235 crore -- to bag the Pune and Kochi franchises respectively and the amount is bigger than the collective worth of Rs 2,840 of the original eight franchises.

"I was indeed a little bit surprised by the amount.

Honestly speaking, I thought the winning bid would be USD 300-320 million. So it was USD 40-50 million higher than my expectation. The bidders must have done their numbers well," Modi said.

He, however, assured that the franchisees can make enough money out of the league.

Prabhakaran returns to Jaffna: he’s not dead!

Who said that Velupillai Prabhakaran is dead?

According to a report in TamilNet (Friday 19, March) his voice is still alive and screaming. In fact, his voice was heard again by a small gathering assembled at Veerasingham Hall on Friday. The message in the voice was so familiar they must have been wondering whether Prabhakaran went down in Nandikadal at all.. Leaving no ambiguity in the minds of the Jaffnaites the voice said:

1. I will scrap all the military camps in Jaffna peninsula

2. I will also scrap the High Security Zones

3. I will appoint a commission of inquiry to find out to what happened to missing Tamils under Mahinda Rajapaksa

4. The Sinhalese will have to beg forgiveness of the pain inflicted on the Tamils

5. All paramilitary forces will be disarmed except the forces of the state.

Isn’t that the known voice of Prabhakaran? But due to unavoidable circumstances he couldn’t be there in person. So he sent his loyal alter ego. He sent Ranil Wickremesinghe who repeated his agenda verbatim. He, to all intents and purposes, seems to be very keen on keeping Prabhakaran alive and well. It seems that he likes impersonating Prabhakaran because he has no credible identity of his own.

According to the pictures published in TamilNet Veerasingham Hall was occupied by about 200 – 300 people. That figure speaks loudly and clearly about Wickremesinghe’s appeal to the Jaffnaites. Obviously, he must be a joke to them because he is cutting a ridiculous figure when he pretends to be Prabhakaran. Which sensible Jaffnaite will believe that Wickremesinghe can do what Prabhakaran couldn’t do?

Besides, they must be sick to their back teeth with the big promises made by Prabhakaran. Even the stooges of Prabhakaran in the TNA have jettisoned his big dream of Eelam. But Wickremesinghe is imagining that he can do better than Prabhakaran. To be honest, the drummers in the nagasalam that accompanied him and his wife to the Hall made a bigger impact in Jaffna than all the nasal noises he made in his opportunistic speech.

In any case, the Jaffnaites would have taken all what he said with a pinch of salt because they know that his boasts ( example : CFA) never works. They are mature enough to know that to implement Prabhakaran’s agenda he must first have the power. But they know that his chances of becoming prime minister (forget April 8!) even in 2015 is as great as resurrecting Prabhakaran and make him walk on the waters of Nandikadal..

But this does not deter Wickremesinghe. He goes on like a wound up robot in a one-track route that goes straight to Nandikadal. According to some sociological statistics, the suicidal rate in Jaffna is the highest in Sri Lanka. Wickremesinghe opening his campaign in Jaffna and repeating Prabhakaran’s agenda is another way of keeping the suicide statistics at peak level.

As I said earlier, he has not strategies. He has only stunts. Repeating Prabhakaran’s agenda is his latest stunt. This stunt is to appease one community at the expense of the other without realizing that he can lose both. He says, for instance, that “we” (implying the state/Sinhalese?) must apologize to the “people” (Tamils?). Doesn’t he know that his President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, apologized publicly to the Tamils for acts of commission and omission? So how many more times is the state going to apologize to the Tamils?

Besides, which sole representative of the Tamils has apologized to the crimes committed in their name to the other communities? When Anton Balasingham apologized for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi his leader, Prabhakaran, distanced himself from it by maintaining a grim silence. In fact, when the crimes against the other communities were pointed out the theoretician Balasingham argued that “collateral damage” was inevitable in any war.

However, he didn’t think that the same argument could be applied to the Sri Lankan forces. In their twisted logic, when war crimes and crimes against humanity are committed in the name of Tamils they are classified as “collateral damage” and when the Sri Lankan forces commit similar acts they are classified as “war crimes and crimes against humanity”.

Wickremesinghe has joined the Tiger lobby pointing the finger at the Sinhala-Buddhists. As for apologizing shouldn’t he give the lead by apologizing for ridiculing and demeaning the forces when they were advancing with self-sacrificing courage to eradicate terrorism so that Wickremesinghe could go to Jaffna and campaign peacefully? Now, if he is a gentleman that some say he is, shouldn’t he publicly apologize to the soldiers who fought on behalf of all communities for them to live in a peaceful and democratic society, however defective it may be?

Without an ounce of shame, he even decided to make the General whom he ridiculed at the height of war as his president in peace time. After the war Wickremesinghe has no qualms in joining hands with the General who had sworn to take the soldiers who fought under his command to an international tribunal. So why isn’t Wickremesinghe asking his would-be president to apologize to the soldiers and the nation for his treacherous betrayal? Or is Wickremesinghe quite content with the General’s performance hoping that he could reap some benefit from it?

Another boast of his goes like this: “Once UNP comes to power our aim will be to restore normalcy of life and prioritizing development of the country and we will strive to achieve these goals.” In the first place, there is a big “IF” right in front of his claim.

Second, did he restore normalcy with his CFA or did he worsen it? He admitted in an interview with a Tamil radio in Europe that he is not responsible for the breakdown of peace but that they should blame Prabhakaran. But that is not what he said when he removed the barriers on the roads and allowed all Tiger terrorists to gain free access to Colombo and other strategic places. He was cocksure of solving the terrorist problem with his futile CFA.

As for prioritizing development the Wijedasa Rajapakse report speaks eloquently about how Ravi Karuanayake & Co prioritized the development of their bank accounts when Wickremesinghe was in power.

Finally, he says that all paramilitary forces will be disarmed except the forces of the state. Didn’t he say that jointly with Prabhkaran in the failed CFA? Of course, he went further. He even pulled up the Navy Commander for attacking an LTTE ship that was threatening territorial integrity and sovereignty of the nation. He never had the guts to pull up Prabhakaran even when he committed the worst crimes against humanity and the nation..

The upshot of all this is that we have Prabhakaran coming back to haunt us again with Wickremesinghe attempting to play the role of Prabhakaran better than Prabhakaran. The moral: we must never assume that Prabhakaran is dead as long as Wickremesinghe is alive.

Railways ad goof-up shows Delhi in Pakistan

Saturday, March 20, 2010

In a major goof-up, an advertisement inserted in newspapers by the Eastern Railway showed Delhi in Pakistan and Kolkata in the Bay of Bengal.

The advertisement was to announce inauguration of luxury tourist train 'Maharaja's Express' by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee from here.

A small box inside the advertisement panel showed the train route from Kolkata to Delhi via Gaya, Varanasi, Bandhabgarh, Khajuraho, Agra and Gwalior.

As the faint background of the outline of a small map of India showed Kolkata in the Bay of Bengal and Delhi in Pakistan, ER Chief Public Relations Officer Samir Goswami said, "It is a great mistake. We apologise for this. The advertising agency has been blacklisted."

He said there was no mistake in the design approved by the Eastern Railway, which had given correct details to the advertising agency.

Symonds breaks Chargers jinx against Kings XI

Cuttack, March 20 (IANS) An all-round show by Andrew Symonds helped defending champions Deccan Chargers beat Kings XI Punjab for the first time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by six wickets at their new found home base here Friday.

Symonds struck a brisk 53 off 38 balls as Deccan Chargers scored 170 for seven in 20 overs. The burly Queenslander, who was also adjudged as the Man of the Match, picked up one for 22 and also took an important catch to dismiss Irfan Pathan, who tried to steal a win with his brilliant 60, but still Kings XI Punjab fell short of the total and could muster 164 for eight in 20 overs.

For Deccan Chargers it was their first win at their home base of Cuttack, after IPL matches were moved out of Hyderabad due to security situations. It was also their maiden win against the Kings XI Punjab in fifth face-off.

Skipper Adam Gilchrist took the Chargers to a flying start with his 33 off 12 balls hitting four fours and two sixes and by the time he departed, they had 43 runs on board in the third over. V.V.S. Laxman (10) also made his way back to the pavilion soon after he was hit on the forearm by Shalabh Srivastav's wayward throw.

Symonds and Herschelle Gibbs (23) then took the Kings XI bowlers to all parts of the ground with their 55-run stand for the second wicket. Symonds smashed three fours and three sixes during his whirlwind knock. Tirumalasetti Suman also contributed 26 valuable runs at the end as the Chargers put on a challenging total.

Kings XI made a poor start but opener Ravi Bopara (38) continued his good form. Pathan tried to pull off a sensational win with his 29-ball knock hitting five sixes and three fours, but by then the Chargers were on course to deserving victory.

"I thought I would reach the sixth rank this week. It was a pleasant surprise. For the last one year or so it was my goal to reach the top-5 and I am thrilled. I think the semifinal finish at the All England made this possible,"

"I think a top-3 finish is a real possibility now. I hope to do that within a year. But my main target would be to win as many important titles as possible. I came close to winning one in Birmingham last week,"

It was very close. At 19-19 in the first game I should have served a bit better. Though it was painful to lose at that stage I am very happy with my performance. My aim is to win the Olympic gold in London. I am confident to doing well at the Olympics,

In Delhi Daredevils Vs Mumbai Indians match Sachin scores 63 runs

IPL 3: Delhi Daredevils Vs Mumbai Indians | MI vs DD: Delhi Daredevils vs Mumbai Indians IPL 2010 Live | Delhi Daredevils vs Mumbai Indians IPL 2010 | Cricket Video | Live Streaming | IPL Live Cricket Score | mi vs dd

In Delhi Daredevils Vs Mumbai Indians match (MI Vs DD), it was Sachin Tendulkar, captain Mumbai Indians, all over the packed Firozeshah Kotla stadium in New Delhi. The match between Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians was a visual treat for the spectators that had Sachin, the master blaster carving the victory for Mumbai Indians with his sensational knock of 63 runs off 32 balls, what more could the spectators have asked for?

Mumbai Indians registered a victory by a huge margin of 98-runs over the host Delhi Daredevils in the DLF-IPL match on Wednesday.

The hero of the Delhi Daredevils Vs Mumbai Indians match (MI Vs DD) match was Sachin Tendulkar. On the notorious Kotla pitch that was rendered unfit for playing international

games only few months back, this batsman displayed an innings that was par excellence. It was the sheer magic of the bat of the veteran opener that led Mumbai Indians place a gigantic score of 218 for seven before Sehwag’s Delhi Daredevils. Sachin was on a rampage from the beginning which was too hard to handle for the bowlers of Delhi Daredevils.

Sachin Tendulkar completed his fifty in just 23 balls and plundered a total of 63 runs with his trademark shots. The Daredevils had the opportunity to have him had Amit Mishra not dropped his catch on 35. His strike rate was 200 much to the misery of Delhi Daredevils; the helpless bowlers could not do anything but to see the balls flying of the fence.

And with his departure, winning just became impossible for Daredevils and could accumulate 122 for 9 in 16.3 overs.

The Score card of Mumbai Indians (MI) had Jayasurya c sub b Maharoof at 7, Sachin Tendulkar c sub b Mishra at 63, Tiwary run out at 61 Ryudu c Dilshan b Maharoof at 34.

LF govt digs heels against Foreign University Bill

Tags : Foreign University Bill, kolkata

The state government will oppose the Foreign University Bill that was cleared today by the Union Cabinet. In principle the CPM has already opposed the Bill saying it would lead to commercialisation and privatisation of education.

Subimal Sen, vice-chairman, West Bengal Council of Higher Education, said the state government has earlier conveyed its reservations on the Bill and is not ready to accept it in any form.

“The Yashpal Committee has recommended that skilled faculty from foreign countries can teach in our educational institutions. It said the institutes cannot take the profit home. By allowing the universities to carry profit home, the Centre has gone against the recommendations from its own committee,” said Sen.

In the Bill, the universities have been allowed to carry profit from consultancies and technology developed but cannot corner profit from academic activities.

Yusuf Pathan’s innings best I’ve ever seen: Shane Warne

Saturday, March 13, 2010

Tags : Shane Warne, Yusuf Pathan, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Rajasthan Royals

Shane Warne rates the Yusuf Pathan blast as the best innings ever he has watched. “I have watched a lot of Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara knocks. This was the best I have seen,” said the Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain, on the fastest IPL hundred, rattled up in 37 balls.

Mumbai Indians became the first team in IPL 2010 to face the Pathan test. Many other bowlers will face the heat when the RR blaster takes the battle into rival camps. Sachin Tendulkar tried out six bowlers, made repeated field changes to make the batsman think.

Bowlers and fielders are aware now that Pathan does not spend too much time thinking at the crease, for him batting is an expression of power in his shoulders and instinctive assessment of length. The knock

was just another delightful day at work for the blaster.

He warmed up for action against Bangladesh spinner Ali Murtuza, hitting three sixes, then doused R Sathish’s enthusiasm with two sixes, four boundaries in one over as RR’s main hope raced to 53 off 21 balls. Tendulkar put fielders on the ropes as Ryan McLaren steamed in. Pathan stretched and glided the ball to the fence at third-man.
