CBI grills Ramalinga Raju on diversion of funds

CBI grills Ramalinga Raju on diversion of funds

CBI sleuths grilled founder and ex-chairman of the erstwhile Satyam Computers Services Limited, B. Ramalinga Raju, for about three hours on Tuesday in connection with diversion of funds to other countries.

According to official sources, the questioning of Mr. Raju would continue for the next couple of days.

The CBI reportedly sought clarifications about where he had parked the funds.

The investigating agency had in the past sent letters rogatory to six countries. While UK, USA, Singapore and Malaysia had sent part replies, Belgium and British Virgin Islands had not responded.

The sources said that the questioning centred around funds which had “come and gone” in 1999-2000.

The CBI had issued notice on Monday summoning Mr. Raju to appear before it on Tuesday.

Mr. Raju is the prime accused in the multi-crore Satyam Computers fraud case. He was granted bail on August 18 by the Andhra Pradesh High Court and was discharged from the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), where he was undergoing treatment for Hepatitis C, on October 2.

While granting bail, the court directed Mr. Raju to report daily to the investigation officer after discharge from the hospital.

Cancellation

Following a petition by the CBI seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Mr. Raju by the High Court, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to him and posted the next hearing to October 22.

Rural population fighting a losing battle against blindness

Thursday, October 14, 2010

On the occasion of World Sight Day, leading ophthalmologists of Bangalore pointed out that it is time more attention is paid towards the prevention of blindness, given that visual disability could blight the entire future of an individual.

Though 80 percent of the diseases that cause progressive damage to eye sight are preventable and curable, the condition has assumed serious proportions in the country.

According to doctors, the blindness rate across the world is about 0.3 percent but in India it stands at 1.1 percent.

Need for awareness campaigns
According to experts, blindness occurs primarily due to ignorance.

Common eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, and diabetic retinopathy, all treatable ailments, are the major causes of vision loss.

However, the high rate of blindness due to these problems is because of lethargic attitude and the lack of awareness about an effective cure.

The best solution to tackle blindness is to create public awareness of risk factors for the condition, early detection, access to eye health and vision care
services and improved systems for the delivery of eye care across the nation.

Dr Balakrishna Shetty, chairman of Devi Eye Hospital stated, “We need to spread awareness through educative films and the media. People should also talk about it with their families. Many more eye screening camps should be held.”

Rural population fighting a losing battle against blindness
Blindness is equally distributed among the urban and rural population.

Though most of the technology which can reduce blindness is available, much of the rural population is engaged in a losing battle against the ravages of blindness.

The ophthalmic health care delivery systems are virtually nonexistent in the villages while trained manpower and financial resources are sorely lacking.

Dr Bhujang Shetty, managing director, Narayana Netralaya asked, “Restoration of sight and blindness prevention strategies are among the most cost-effective interventions in healthcare. But how much have we succeeded in taking it to the people?

He added, “The facility to perform an eye surgery is not available in rural areas. We are witnessing new technological developments in the area. It is high time we reach both the urban and rural population equally.”

Man to fly around Moon for the first time

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Russian, European and US space agencies are considering the possibility of flying a manned mission around the Moon using the space station as a launching point.

The agencies want the station to become more than just a high-flying platform for doing experiments in microgravity - they want to see it become a testbed for the technologies and techniques that will be needed by humans when they push out beyond low-Earth orbit to explore destinations such as asteroids and Mars.

"The idea is to ascend to the space station the various elements of the mission, and then try to assemble the spacecraft at the ISS, and go from the orbit of the space station to the Moon," the BBC quoted Europe's director of human spaceflight, Simonetta Di Pippo.

This vehicle would then likely return straight to Earth, rather than returning to the ISS. The venture would need some kind of CSM element for the astronauts, together with a departure stage - a propulsion unit that could accelerate the astronauts' vehicle out of low-Earth orbit, putting it on a path to the Moon.

navratri colours | Fusion dressing is in this Navratri

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

This Navratri, fashion will be redefined by revellers across the city. While last year saw the return of the traditional ghagra and choli, this year, it’s all about mixing-and-matching of Indo-western style. Ghagras will be shorter and cholis are being replaced with basic colour tank tops.

“We have reduced the length of the ghagra up to our calves, but have maintained the flair. Since, we have designed our ghagras intricately, we want to keep the top simple. By wearing basic coloured tank tops, we will be able to give the traditional look a western touch,” said Pearl Salva, a first-year fashion-designing student from SNDT.

Salva and her friends, who designed their own ghagras this year, wanted to have the best of both worlds this Navratri. The ghagra-tank top combo is perfect for youngsters who want be comfortable with what they wear and also appear fashionable.

“Navratri is all about colours. I’m planning to jazz up my outfit by using bright coloured dupattas, which will go well with my simple black top,” said Khushboo Nagda, a FYBFM student from Somaiya College.

Adding large, chunky oxidised pieces of jewellery to the simple top is also a fashion statement youngsters want to make.

“Accessories play a huge part when dressing up for the festival. FabIndia has these amazing thin belts, which look like designer pieces over ghagras,” said Kunjita Sampat, an engineering student from DJ Sanghvi College.

Another fusion trend that will appear this Navratri is dancers wearing Kolhapuri footwear. Pastel-coloured Kolhapuris are being considered as comfortable footwear, which is much needed during the long nights of dancing.

Ponting perturbed over his champion side choking in nail biting finishes

Sydney, Oct 6 (ANI): Ricky Ponting has said he is concerned about his side, known for its mental toughness, choking in crunch situations after taking into account all the tight contests that the Australian team has lost recently.

“We’ve had a few tight ones, we’ve been in some situations in the last few series, some times we could have won games … that’s really the only thing I’ve been thinking about since walking off the ground, South Africa in Australia last time, first Test in Cardiff in the last Ashes series, there’s a few that I’ve been thinking about already,” Ponting said.

“It’s disappointing that we haven’t been able to nail some of those really crucial moments that define champion teams. That’s what we haven’t been unable to do just yet, but the more we get there and get ourselves into those positions we’ll start to grab hold of a few of those chances. When we do that we might just get on a bit of a roll,” he said.

“You don’t know how they’re going to take it until you see them in a similar situation next time,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Ponting, as saying.

“The best way to look at it is like a golfer that has got a couple of shots’ lead with a couple of holes to go and doesn’t get across the line; you don’t know if it’s going to be a good experience having been there once, or if it’s a thing they might not overcome next time,” he said.

Ponting further said that India’s spectacular win due to Laxman’s special innings and Ishant Sharma’s composed stay at the wicket to put on 81 runs for the ninth wicket, had left the team deeply scarred.

“This is a tough loss for us there’s no doubt about it, it’s no good hiding from it, this hurts all of us, and I’m sure it’s hurt a lot of people at home that have been watching on telly. There’s no doubt we’re bitterly disappointed with the result, the dressing room is very, very quiet at the moment,” Ponting said.

The second Test starts in Bangalore on Saturday. (ANI)
