Funeral procession of Andhra student taken to Assembly

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Amid tight security, the body of Sai Kumar, a second year B. Tech student of Osmania University, was brought to Gun Park near the Andhra Pradesh state assembly on Tuesday night to enable supporters of the Telangana movement to pay their last respects.

Sai Kumar’s body was later taken to his native village Kodad in Nalgonda district where the last rites will be performed Wednesday.

The student hanged himself in his hostel room Tuesday to protest the delay in carving out a Telangana state. In his suicide note, he expressed the wish that his body be taken in a procession to the assembly.

The suicide triggered fresh tension in Osmania University, the nerve centre of the ongoing Telangana movement, as students clashed with police at Gandhi Hospital when the latter did not allow them to take the body to assembly. Some students were injured when police used batons.

Maoist link to Telangana protests? | Telangana violent

Saturday, February 20, 2010

Reportedly issued a shocking warning saying that Maoists have infiltrated the Telangana protests, using them as a cover to infuse violence and chaos in Andhra Pradesh.

Sources in the Home Ministry have confirmed to TIMES NOW, that Maoist sympathisers have indeed infiltrated the ranks of pro-Telangana student protestors at the Osmania University, the epicentre of the protests.

Sources further add that Maoists are taking advantage of the ongoing agitation demanding statehood for Telangana by forming a major part of the protests.

Maoists have a sizeable presence in Andhra Pradesh as the state is a part of the infamous 'Red Corridor'. It was also the homeground of the People's War Group, one of the original constituents of the Communist Party of India (Maoist).

Hyderabad, which witnessed violent protests by pro-Telangana students yesterday, is in for more turmoil today with the students planning to hold demonstrations again.

The students demanding statehood for Telangana have vowed to continue their agitation today. The activists say their protests will continue till Telangana is carved out of Andhra Pradesh.

On Saturday (February 20), the students clashed with the police first at the Nizam College, Osmania University and also the state Secretariat where the legislature had convened for the budget session.

Security had been tightened outside the AP state assembly, with nearly 20,000 policemen deployed to ensure that none of the protestors created any havoc during the budget session. The students have started the recent demonstrations to protest the terms of reference of the newly-formed Sri Krishna Panel on Telangana. They want the commission to end its probe and release findings within 6 months instead of a year.
