M.F. Husain indian citizen? - No.. M.F. Husain to accept Qatar citizenship, says son

M.F. Husain, 95, has dozens of lawsuits against him across the country for his paintings of goddesses that some Hindus find sacrilegious. The artist has been living abroad as a fugitive since 2006.

The celebrated painter left Dubai for Qatar Friday, his son filmmaker-writer-painter Owais Husain told IANS on phone from Dubai.

'Yes, he has left for Qatar where he was warmly received by a large welcoming committee. I was supposed to accompany him from here in Dubai to Qatar. But at the last minute I couldn't go. He travelled alone, as he has all his life, to his new home.

'My father has definitely accepted their offer (of Qatari citizenship). After years of being away from his real home (in India) this sense of belonging, albeit in an adopted country, was I think, very important at this stage of his life,' said Owais.

role model for world cricket - Pakistani players

Pakistan batsman Shoaib Malik

"For any cricketer he is the perfect role model. The great thing about him is that he has been outstanding in both Tests and ODIs. As a Pakistani player, I know how much value we have always put on his wicket,"

Latif

"I always expected him to be the first one to score 200 in ODIs, but I was surprised that he took so long,"

Aamir Sohail

"The rule is simple when you give respect to the game, then only the game will give you respect."

Javed Miandad

"Records are there to be broken but it makes you happy when someone like Tendulkar does it. I think he thoroughly deserves this record and many more in days to come,"

I don't eat, drink or move: Anjali Tendulkar

For all the fame he achieved even before the start of his international career, Sachin Tendulkar's wife Anjali couldn't recognise him when they first met in 1990 and she says the batting maestro perhaps fell for her lack of cricket knowledge.

"I first met him at the Mumbai airport when he returned from his first tour of England in 1990, after scoring his maiden Test ton. In fact, when I first saw him at the airport, I didn't even know who he was. It was purely by accident!" Anjali, who married Tendulkar in 1995, said.

"I was there to pick up my mother and Sachin was arriving with the Indian team. That's where we saw each other for the first time... we had a courtship of five years and got married in 1995. We had got engaged a year before that in 1994 and that was in New Zealand," she said in a published interview.

Ignorant about cricket when she first started dating Tendulkar, Anjali said she read up everything about the game soon after but the man himself didn't like discussing the sport at home.

"I think what he liked about me was that I knew nothing about cricket when I first met him. But then, me being me, I read everything about the game. I came to know all the fielding positions but he doesn't like me discussing cricket at home. But at times when he is low or upset, I do talk to him about cricket. Again, it's not the game but things related to it that we discuss," she said.

On whether Tendulkar's fame had come in the way of getting the simple pleasures like a movie, Anjali recalled how the batting great had to come in disguise to watch a movie during their courtship.

"... We had gone to see the movie Roja. I was studying medicine then and a couple of my friends planned. Sachin did try telling me that it would be difficult but I insisted that he come along. To make sure nobody recognised him, we even got him a beard. He wore specs as well and we went in late. We watched the first half of the film, but during the interval, Sachin dropped his specs and people immediately recognised him. It was a bit of disaster and we were forced to leave halfway," she told 'Times of India' in an interview.

Anjali gave up her promising medical career to be Tendulkar's "biggest support" and after 14 years of marriage, she doesn't regret her decision one bit.

"Though I loved every moment of my studying days and my days at the government hospital, it then came to a stage when I realised that I could not be married to Sachin and also have a full-time career. It wasn't possible because he depends on me for almost everything. It was my decision. I thought I should be at home with him and make everything perfect for him," she recalled.

"In his childhood, brother Ajit did everything for Sachin, sacrificing his own interests. I thought I should do the same. Besides, mine would not have been a 9 to 5 job. I'm a paediatrician, so if there's a patient calling me or someone admitted at odd hours, I have to make myself available", she said.

"With Sachin not around and me with two kids at home, it wouldn't have been possible. I took a decision and I have never, ever regretted it," Anjali said.

Tendulkar completes 20 years of international cricket tomorrow and Anjali said she still can't stop herself from getting tensed when he comes out to bat, so much so that she doesn't even get up to take a phone call when he is at the crease.

"Actually, I have one particular spot in the house from where I can watch TV and also keep an eye on my Ganpati (Ganesha). I don't eat. I don't answer phones. I don't drink. I don't even move. I don't reply to any sms until he's out," she said.

Nineteen years of knowing the cricketer India worships, Anjali said she has learnt to deal with the pulls and pressures that come with being his better half.

"For me, it's very easy because I've known Sachin for 19 years now. I understand him so well. So whether I am his girlfriend or his wife, it's the same thing, just an extension of that bond. I don't find it very difficult and I'm used to it.

"Maybe, it's also because I've not known any other person in my life except Sachin. Of course, there are many challenges and difficulties to being his wife but the whole family, including my children, has learnt to deal with it," she said.

But Anjali wishes that Tendulkar doesn't have to spend so much time away from his home and two young children.

On the many moods of the batting genius, who seems calm and composed almost all the time on field, Anjali revealed Tendulkar is miserable when the team doesn't do well while he goes on to achieve a personal milestone.

"It's much worse when he does well and the team doesn't. I know how much it affects him because, for him, the country always comes first. To me it doesn't matter whether he scores one run or 10 runs or even a 100. I'll still be happy because I know he's really trying hard. But I know how much it affects him when he does well and the team loses, like it happened in Hyderabad (against Australia). It's very upsetting," she said.

TENDULKAR REWRITES RECORD BOOKS AGAIN

INDIA superstar Sachin Tendulkar became the first man to score a double century in a One Day International with a spectacular innings against South Africa.

The brilliant batsman made history in Gwalior by beating the record score set by Charles Coventry of Zimbabwe and Pakistan's Saeed Anwar.

No other player has made as many ODI centuries as Tendulkar, who racked up his 46th ton in this form of the game when batting throughout his side's innings.

The full stats are he faced 147 deliveries and smashed 25 boundaries including three sixes.

Tendulkar, 36, is rewriting the record books all the time.

He has hit the most runs in Test cricket (13,447) and ODIs, and nobody has scored more Test tons than the Little Master.

NASSER HUSSAIN: Mighty Sachin Tendulkar even tops Lara, Ponting and The Don!

I have never liked comparisons between great players, but after Wednesday’s incredible game it must be said — Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman of all time.

Better than Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting, the other two great players of my era. better than Sir Viv Richards, Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border. and I would even say better than Sir Don Bradman himself.

Now he has the first double hundred in a one-day international — hitting 25 fours and three sixes as India beat South Africa by 153 runs — he has swung it for me.

Little master: Record-breaker Tendulkar celebrates reaching his landmark

SACHIN BY NUMBERS

46 One-day international hundreds

166 Test matches played

240 Sixes in all international cricket

442 One-day internationals

13,447 Test runs scored

17,598 one-day international runs

45.12 One-day international batting average

55.56 Test batting average

I played against Tendulkar on my first England tour, the Nehru Cupin India in 1989, and I could still see that excited boy in big pads inGwalior.

That extraordinary drive and enthusiasm are what make Tendulkar sospecial. He has been playing international cricket for 20 years underthe intense scrutiny being an Indian superstar brings, so it isremarkable he still loves holding a bat as much as ever.

Halfway through the Indian innings on Wednesday, Tendulkar wasalready on more than a hundred. It’s almost a given that he will reachthree figures. But even he had not turned it into a double in a 50-overinternational before, and this was not against a lowly side but SouthAfrica, one of the most formidable bowling attacks in the world.

There was no slogging — just pure, attacking strokeplay.

Tendulkar has gone back to being the fluent, almost flamboyant, batsman he used to be. In recent years his innings had become a bitmechanical, but I think he has remembered what made him great.

I interviewed Sachin for Sportsmail when he was touring England acouple of years ago — one of the highlights of my career since Istopped playing, and it was noticeable that he is not driven by money.

Better than the rest: Tendulkar is better than Lara (left) and Bradman

He has become a very wealthy man, but that has been as a result ofdoing what he does best and enjoying it. it has not been the be all andend all for him.

What else is left for Tendulkar now? well, it is sometimes said thathe has not played enough match-winning innings on the really bigoccasion for India.

What better, then, than to score a hundred in the World Cup finalagainst Australia — or maybe even England — on home soil this time nextyear.

That would be the full stop that would enable Tendulkar to ride off into the sunset with everything achieved in his career.

My admiration for him is total. To steal the nickname of a certainfootball coach who led Inter Milan against Chelsea on Wednesday, SachinTendulkar truly is The Special one.
