Top 10 new camera rumours for 2010

Thursday, December 31, 2009

1) 24-megapixel Nikon D700X
Rumours of a higher resolution version of the Nikon D700 were circulating as early as February 2009, and Nikon certainly needs to act quickly to keep up with the Canon EOS 5D MkII. The D700’s 12-megapixel sensor may be great at high ISOs, but the difference in resolution compared to the 21-megapixel EOS 5D MkII is painful. At the top end of the range, Nikon’s split its original D3 into a high-resolution model (D3X) and high-speed version (D3S). Logic suggests the venerable D700 is now ripe for the same treatment. Some sources suggest the D700 won’t get the same 24-megapixel sensor as the D3X in case it undermines its sales, guessing at 18MP or so instead, but Nikon didn’t worry about that when it launched the D700 alongside the D3, so why would it worry now?

2) APS-C format Canon PowerShot G12

Canon showed with the PowerShot G11 that it wasn’t afraid to step back from the brink in the megapixel war, and the G11’s improved high ISO performance and excellent definition prove what everyone’s been saying all along – that you can’t increase megapixels without increasing the sensor size. And it could be that the G11 is only an interim measure for Canon and a stepping stone towards a much more radical camera, and that an APS-C format PowerShot is on the way. That’s not such a wild idea. Olympus and Panasonic have shown the level of interest which exists in larger-format compacts, and Samsung’s been bouncing around the NX concept camera for a while now. We think it’s not a question of if, but when.

3) Canon EOS 1Ds Mk IV

Once, the position of Canon’s EOS 1Ds was unassailable. Now it’s under threat both from rivals (Nikon D3X, Sony Alpha a900) and its own stablemate the EOS 5D MkII which, let’s not forget, has the same resolution as the 1Ds and an HD movie mode. A new version of the 1Ds is long overdue and some sources are suggesting it may have a radical new square 36 x 36mm sensor. This would retain compatibility with Canon’s EF lenses but offer a larger image area and the advantages of classic square medium format cameras (flexibility in cropping, no need to rotate the camera for different orientations). If Canon took this bold step it would be a showstopper, but at the very least we should expect an increase in resolution and a full HD movie mode.

4) Nikon D7000

Nikon’s been refreshing its non-professional D-SLR range and the D90 is the last of the old guard left. Technically, there’s little wrong with it, but the model name and some of the features are out of step with the camera below it. The D5000 is cheaper, for example, but has the same sensor and an articulating LCD. We’re not expecting any increase in resolution because Nikon’s only just launched the 12-megapixel D300S, so we predict a cosmetic redesign and a few routine updates. The logical name for the new model is the D7000 and we expect a larger body than the D5000 but an articulating 3-inch 920,000 pixel LCD and some carefully-judged performance advantages. Nikon will be aiming for the D90’s existing market – advanced amateurs who want professional levels of quality and features but in a lighter and less expensive form than the D300S.

5) Fujifilm S7 Pro

Fujifilm launched its high dynamic range SuperCCD SR sensor in 2003 but chose its compact cameras as a test bed before incorporating it into a digital SLR, the FinePix S3 Pro. This was a great camera and the subsequent S5 Pro (which shared the same sensor) was even better. Now Fujifilm has moved on, developing its new high-resolution, high-sensitivity, high dynamic range EXR sensor. This has successfully debuted in a range of compact cameras (F70EXR, S200EXR) and if history’s any guide we can expect an EXR SLR in 2010. Is Fujifilm still interested in the D-SLR market? If so, what are the odds of a brand new 24/12-megapixel S7 Pro?

6) Panasonic G2/GH2

Panasonic’s proved the worth of the Micro Four Thirds sensor with the G1, the GH1 and the GF1, but is that 12-megapixel sensor enough? In 2010 we think we’re going to see Panasonic (and Olympus) upping the stakes. So what’s it to be – 14 megapixels, 15, 16? There’s nowhere to go with the sensor size, after all, but there is scope for improvement in resolution, build, continuous shooting speed and features for pros. We could see G-series cameras diversifty into different sectors of the market in the same way as Olympus has developed a whole range of Four Thirds digital SLRs. Panasonic has to move quickly because there’s no reason why APS-C sensors can’t be used in compacts too.

7) Samsung NX

The problem for Samsung is that it announced the NX so long ago, and so little has happened since, that the press and the public alike have rather gone off the boil. In the meantime, Olympus and Panasonic have debuted their rather good Micro Four Thirds cameras and kickstarted this new hybrid market on their own, so that by the time the NX does arrive its newsworthiness may be limited. The main features are known already: an APS-C format sensor in a mirrorless body with an electronic viewfinder and interchangeable lens system. The precise details won’t be known until the launch, but the best guess at the moment seems to be 14.6MP, HD movies and a bespoke lens system.

8) Olympus E-5

It looks as if we can expect a new Olympus D-SLR body in 2010, but will it be a replacement for the ageing E-3 pro SLR or yet another mid-range/enthusiasts body? Most of the Olympus news has concerned its mid-range cameras and Micro Four Thirds, but the company has also invested heavily over the years in its professional lens range, so it would be a suprise if it gave up on this sector of the market just yet. And yet the current E-3 relies on Olympus’s old 10-megapixel MOS sensor, which is nowhere near as good as the 12-megapixel sensor in the newer models, so it badly needs a refresh. So will we get a new pro Olympus body? And, even more interestingly, will it be a Four Thirds SLR or a mirrorless Micro Four Thirds ‘SLR’ instead?

9) Nikon APS-C compact

We’ve heard rumours of a Canon APS-C compact but there’s also talk of a 12-megapixel Nikon APS-C model too, though none of it’s coming from Nikon. The rumours appear to originate from comments made by a Leica representative discussing the sensor in the Leica X1 and have been seized upon and extrapolated by digital camera forums around the world. But is it such a wild guess? In fact, isn’t it a little surprising that Nikon hasn’t made a 12-megapixel APS-C compact already? If Canon does come up with an APS-C sized PowerShot next year, then all eyes will quickly turn to Nikon. Let’s not forget that Nikon was once just as famous for rangefinder cameras as SLRs. Olympus isn’t the only camera maker with an illustrious non-SLR heritage ripe for exploiting.

10) Sony Cyber-shot R2

Sony’s short-lived Cyber-shot R1 was launched in 2005 and disappeared off the radar not long after that as mainstream digital SLRs captured the public’s imagination instead. But it was a remarkable camera with a 10-megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor and 5x 24-120mm Carl Zeiss zoom with no mirror but an articulating LCD and full time live view. It was ahead of its time, and we wonder if Sony knows it. What if Sony is planning a new version? Let’s call it the Sony Cyber-shot R2. Let’s say it has a 12x fixed (non-interchangeable) 12x super-wideangle zoom, articulating 3-inch 920,000 pixel LCD, 1.4-megapixel EVF, full HD movies and the 10fps continuous shooting and sweep panorama modes of the Cyber-shot HX1. Interesting, eh?

Tiger’s opportunity to reinvent himself

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

No matter whether Elin forgives him, Oprah embraces him or Phil – Knight, not Mickelson – supports him, Tiger Woods has to know that the damage he caused himself, his family and the millions who idolized him will not soon dissipate.

Yet, as is typically the case in the aftermath of a crisis, there is a tremendous opportunity for Woods, who like other celebrities (save O.J.) is permitted one mulligan.

If Woods ignores the opportunity, he will never regain his heroic status. If he seizes it, he may not be as revered as he was during the PSY (pre-scandal years), but he would be more beloved. The choice is his.

It will require a dramatic transformation in his approach on the course, but he’s smart enough and engaging enough, when he chooses, to pull it off. The mission is not complex: Woods must turn into Mickelson. All he needs is to apply the same dedication to his demeanor that he has shown to his game, and it has to start with the next tournament he plays. He should focus more on winning over the skeptics than winning the event. The other victories will come.

Here are five suggestions for Woods to craft a new image:

1: Sign autographs … tons of them

Woods trails Mickelson by a significant margin in this area. But if he were to start closing the gap, it would send a definite signal that he cares deeply about public opinion.

Lefty has gained enormous popularity by extending himself with the galleries, as Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus have done for decades. It is truly remarkable how much time they take to satisfy fans’ requests. Woods could adopt a similar mentality even if extra security was necessary. If it requires a half hour or longer for him to sign after each round, so be it.

2: Smile

The only time Woods smiles is when he pulls off a shot even he didn’t expect to hit. That’s not good enough – not in the new Tiger Woods Era. He needs to smile as frequently as possible, even when his shots go slightly astray, and plenty do. He must show us how the game can humble him at any moment, just as his off-the-course failings humbled him. He can demand perfection as much as he wants – nobody is asking him to lower his standards – but when he isn’t completely satisfied, he should accept the disappointment with grace instead of tossing out the usual profanities. The only swearing Woods should do is to tell the truth.

3: Treat the media with greater respect

After his disastrous 1997 interview with GQ, which featured the famous off-color jokes, Woods decided he would steer clear of the media outside of the traditional pre-tournament press conference and post-round interviews. That selfish, arrogant approach has to change as well. He should sit down with the major golf publications and mainstream media as often as his schedule will allow, and be more revealing in press conferences. He usually provides short, evasive answers, especially when he isn’t crazy about the line of questioning. He has lost that luxury forever.

4: Assist the LPGA Tour

More than any group, women have been the most offended by Woods’ infidelity. Why not, then, make a special effort to help women in an area where he can do so much good? He could initiate the Tiger Woods (insert your favorite charity) Classic, with two pro-ams in which he would participate.

Imagine if Woods were paired with Michelle Wie, for instance, or Paula Creamer on a Wednesday. Think the crowds would come out? It would be the kind of boost the troubled LPGA desperately needs – and perhaps launch a greater amount of cooperation between the two tours. The future of the game depends on women as much as men.

5: Play more frequently in the United States

Woods pocketed a $3 million appearance fee to play last month in Australia. Did he really need the money? Of course not.

Given the economic state of the PGA Tour and the importance of attracting more sponsors and securing the next television package (the current six-year deal with CBS and NBC expires in 2012), imagine if Woods were to announce that he was done with playing overseas in the near future – and would make up the difference by adding a few events to his U.S. schedule. He could tee it up in smaller cities he’s never played before. Woods would generate enormous goodwill in those communities and help keep the tour and his peers solvent for years to come.

Will Woods follow any of these suggestions? Probably not. The bet here is that he will return in late March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, where the King will give him a big hug and all will be forgiven.

Woods will go back to keeping his distance from the galleries and media.

Except all will not be forgiven. He needs to win back our trust … and he will get no more mulligans.

Thiruppavai (With meaning)

Its that time of the year... the month of Maargazhi in our tamil calendar.
Brings back fond memories of my childhood when we used to go for Bhajans in the streets early in the morning in the December cold... We finally go to the temple and recite all the 30 Thiruppavai's... We leave with a handful of prasadham (usually pongal) at the end of it.... Now being in the US, you dont feel whether its maargazhi or kaarthigai or aadi unless you really follow it with the tamil calendar.... Back in India, you feel its kaarthigai maasam when the loudspeakers start playing ayyapan songs in the morning... You know its maargazhi when people go for bhajans or you hear thirppavai on the radio early in the morning.. You know its aadi when the loudspeakers play amman songs... anyway long story short, I thought of starting this thread to post Thiruppavai for each day. I will also add the english meaning provided by Dr. Raghavan.

Introduction to Thiruppavai:
The Saint-poetess ANDAL , the avathAram of BhUmi DEvi observed Paavai Nonbhu ( Paavai vratham) to attain Lord KrishNA as Her Husband (BharthA). She observed a Vratham ,which is a variation of the KaathyAyini Vratham described in Srimath BhAgavatham. The Month chosen for the vratham was Marghazhi or Dhanur Maasam. This vratham takes a whole Month to complete. ANDAL became one of the Gopis of Gokulam -- who observed the Marghazhi Vratham --and joined Her young friends to obtain the PurushArtham ( the choicest /Highest boon) of Nithya Kaimkaryam (eternal service to the Lord )and to have Him as their BharthA. ANDAL addresses Her play mates and fellow Vratham observers as " yElOrempAvAi" . Sri UtthamUr Swamy has explained that this "yElOrempAvai " refrain found in the 29 of the 30 paasurams of ThiruppAvai as Yel+ ohr+ YempAvAi ( Oh My dear friend ! I will describe the facets of this Paavai Nonbhu and please understand them , accept their meanings and practise them ).

India v Sri Lanka, 1st ODI, Rajkot | Sehwag and Tendulkar dazzle

Monday, December 14, 2009

India started quietly on a well-grassed pitch, but once the acceleration came, Kumar Sangakkara's decision to bowl first looked foolish as Virender Sehwag clattered a 66-ball hundred, while adding 153 with Sachin Tendulkar at nearly eight runs an over. Dilhara Fernando provided some respite with a beautiful delivery that nipped back to bowl Tendulkar, but by then India were over the hill and far away. Sehwag's blitz included a six on to the roof of the shamiana behind cover, while Tendulkar eased to 69 from just 63 balls.

There was some early movement for both Nuwan Kulasekara and Chanaka Welegedara, making his one-day debut, and the openers didn't take too many chances. Sehwag twice drove Kulasekara through cover, and there was a lovely back-foot push from Tendulkar as just 19 came from the first five overs. Suddenly, though, the game exploded into life, with Sehwag taking Welegedara for three fours in an over.

Thereafter, Sri Lanka were all over the place, with Tendulkar timing the ball magnificently in the V and Sehwag moving into six-hitting mode. Kulasekara, with his lack of pace, was the ideal target, clouted over cover and then pulled over midwicket with an ease that must have sent a chill down Sangakkara's spine.

Another emphatic pull off Welegedera took him to 50 from just 34 balls and he then spent some time at the non-striker's end watching Tendulkar do his thing. After two glorious lofts down the ground, Tendulkar opted for the impudent, upper-cutting Fernando over gully and slip to reach his own half-century from 48 balls. After overs 6-10 produced 52 runs, the bowling Powerplay cost Sri Lanka 36.

But worse was to follow. Angelo Mathews was introduced, and Sehwag immediately went downtown, thumping one behind the sightscreen and then over cover as the six balls cost 18. Tendulkar joined in with an imperious straight loft off Jayasuriya and it needed Fernando to give the Sri Lankans some breathing space.

Sehwag though doesn't like pauses, and after a brief lull when only singles were taken, he whacked a short one from Jayasuriya over midwicket for six. Two fours off the hapless Mathews later, he had his 12th century, and with half the innings to go, Sri Lanka faced the dire prospect of chasing more than 350. MS Dhoni, who promoted himself to No.3, rubbed it in with a six off Jayasuriya that nearly went out of the ground.

Telangana impact: Vizag ODI moved to Nagpur

Sunday, December 13, 2009

The Indian Cricket Board on Monday shifted the second one-dayer of the five-match series between India and Sri Lanka to Nagpur after police in Visakhapatnam expressed inability to provide security for the tie in the wake of political crisis in Andhra Pradesh.

Agitations are on in Andhra Pradesh over the issue of the formation of a separate Telangana state.

"The second ODI of the five-match series between India and Sri Lanka has been shifted to Nagpur. The match will be a day-night affair, and will be played on the scheduled date of 18 December 2009," BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.

Early in the morning, Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Sambhasiva Rao said that it will be difficult for them to provide the required security staff for the hosting of the match.

"The prevailing situation is such that all the city police are deployed in the maintenance of regular law and order. And to conduct the match in ordinary circumstances we need to deploy 80 percent of the city force

"We have mentioned it to organising locals here that it not possible for us to commit any amount of force for the conduct of the match at this stage," Rao told reporters in Visakhapatman.

Saurashtra Cricket Association which is hosting tomorrow's series-opener in Rajkot had also offered to host the match.

Injured Yuvraj Singh likely to miss first ODI

Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh's participation in the opening match of the ODI series against Sri Lanka is in doubt after he complained of pain in his little finger on the left hand while fielding during the second Twenty20 in Mohali on Saturday. A final decision will be taken on Monday, the eve of the match in Rajkot.

"The team management will give every possible opportunity to Yuvraj play the first ODI but the final call would be taken only tomorrow," a team source said, adding that it could take upto three weeks for him to recover, effectively ruling him out of the five-match series.

Yuvraj, who took 3 for 23 in Mohali, didn't bowl his full quota of overs and bowled only three before he was taken off after the 17th over. However, the injury didn't affect his batting as he slammed an unbeaten 60 off 25 balls, hitting five sixes, to help India comfortably chase down 207 with five balls to spare.

He was taken to a clinic in Rajkot late on Sunday evening after complaining of pain and later took an X-ray. Niranjan Shah, the president of the Saurashtra Cricket Association, told PTI that a final decision will be taken after examining the report submitted by the orthopedic surgeon.

He could be replaced by batsman Virat Kohli, who was called-up a cover for Gautam Gambhir, who was suspected to have been struck with swine flu on the eve of the Mohali game, which was later diagnosed as negative.

Volkswagen Polo goes into production in India

Saturday, December 12, 2009

Volkswagen AG, which recently bought a 19.9% stake in Suzuki Motor, has now started production of the Polo at its plant near Pune. With the Polo, a compact hatchback that will compete against vehicles like the Skoda Fabia, Honda Jazz, Hyundai i20 and Fiat Grande Punto, Volkswagen hopes to make significant inroads into India’s growing car market.

VW, which has invested close to US$850 million at its plant in Chakan, near Pune, currently has a capacity of producing 110,000 cars in India per annum. With three VW Group brands – Audi, Skoda and VW – present in India, all of which will be launching various new cars in India in the near future, the German manufacturer is aiming to garner a major chunk of the car market here over the next few years.

Volkswagen is aiming for a high degree of localisation in its cars made in India, to keep prices in check. However, prices for the India-spec VW Polo are likely to be revealed only next month, when the car is shown at the Auto Expo, in Delhi.

The preparation for Miss World is different than it was for the Miss India pageant. As I am aware that I would be with 120 most beautiful girls I am working hard , besides working out, talent preparation, getting my wardrobe in place . I have also started yoga and meditation so as to keep myself calm and relaxed. I am also making a conscious effort to learn more about different countries and their culture so I become aware of my 120 friends own countries as I am eager to tell them all about my own country.
What's your daily routine?
For me no two days are alike. The days I am not busy with appearances to make in the capacity of Miss India, my day usually starts with physical training, I then meet the designers who are helping me put my wardrobe together for the Miss World pageant. By evening I practice for my dance that I would be performing for the fastrack talent event with the help of my dance instructor. My day usually ends early with some research, meditation and time with my family.
How do you feel about travelling to South Africa?
I have always loved to travel and explore new places, experiencing new cultures and meeting new people is something that I have always loved. I am very excited about travelling to South Africa as I’ve never visited the country before and have read about its beauty, hence I am really looking forward to it. I would be visiting the best places of South Africa with the help of Miss World organisation and am sure it would be a life time experience.
Which elements of Miss World are you most looking forward to?
I am looking forward to travelling and exploring the beautiful country of South Africa and meeting 120 beauties from around the world, and bonding with them. Learning about their diverse cultures and making some good friends that would last me a life time. I am very exited about being a part of the prestigious Miss World pageant, which is an honour to me.
Do you have a message to the other Miss World contestants?
I would like to tell my fellow contestants that although we are competitors for the duration of Miss World, we should look at the bigger picture. We are all ambassadors of our respective countries and are here for a greater purpose which is to promote peace, love, friendship and goodwill amongst our countries. We should make the most of our time there enjoy ourselves and bond.
What do you think are you qualities that youwill bring to the competition?
I am a warm, caring and compassionate young heart I hope to bring more love and goodwill amongst the contestants.
What individual talents will seperate you from the other contestants?
I am good at ballroom dancing, and play badminton and skate. However, my most distinguishing talent is my acting skills. I have done theater at school and college level, and my long term goal is to pursue a career in acting.
What would it mean to you to do well at Miss World?
Doing well at this coveted competition would give me the satisfaction of making my country proud, and an immense personal sense of achievement. It would also provide me a global platform for making my voice heard, and an opportunity to be the change I want to see in the world. I would cherish such a wonderful responsibility, and hope that I can make a difference if and when it is bestowed upon me.
What is your favourite landmark?
My favorite landmark is the beautiful Taj Mahal, which embodies eternal love. The Taj Mahal has always been considered one of the seven wonders of the world and is a symbol of Indian pride. The astonishing architecture surprises me and fills my heart with joy and tranquility. It is a symbol of love.
What is the one thing you cannot live without?
One thing I cannot live without is my family. It is because of their support and wishes that I am where I am today. My sole motivating factor is the smile on their face which gives me a great sense of satisfaction and achievement.
Who do you most admire?
The person I most admire is Mahatma Gandhi the man whose legacy every Indian lives. His ideology of non-violence and universal brotherhood have relevance even today.
Who has inspired you most in your life?
It has undoubtedly been my mother who has had the strongest impression on me. She has brought up my sister and me single-handedly with a great deal of sacrifice, love and dignity .In my growing up years I saw her struggle, go through ups and downs of life all by herself. She tried to give the two of us the best, sacrificing even the basics for her own self. A strong willed, sacrificing and simple woman is what I’ve known her to be. My only inspiration, my true hero.

Sena retains Mumbai bastion; Jadhav is Mayor

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Mumbai: Shiv Sena corporator Shraddha Jadhav was today elected mayor of Mumbai, unwittingly helped by Raj Thackeray, estranged nephew of Sena chief Bal Thackeray, whose Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) stayed away from voting.

The absence of six MNS corporators and seven Samajwadi Party members dashed hopes of Congress to elect its nominee Pricilla Kadam as the mayor.

As voting for the mayoral poll began, the six MNS corporators were busy listening to a speech by Raj at Shanmukhananda hall in Sion. "We skipped voting as supporting Congress would have sent a wrong signal to MNS supporters," a leader of the three-year old outfit said.

Despite trying its best to lure corporators of the ruling Shiv Sena-BJP alliance, Congress failed to grab the mayor's post, a fact acknowledged by Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray.

"We were confident of the victory," Uddhav told reporters. Unlike the assembly elections, where he surfaced four days after Sena got a severe drubbing, Uddhav did not waste a single minute after the mayoral poll results to face the media.

Uddhav indicated that his 83-year old father would now play an active role in the party's day-to-day affairs. "Balasaheb will now visit Sena Bhawan once or twice a month," he said.

In the 228-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which Sena has been ruling for the past 15 years, Jadhav bagged 114 votes, while her nearest rival Congress candidate Pricilla Kadam got 95 votes.

A commerce graduate, Jadhav was elected corporator from Parel as an independent candidate in 1992, before she joined the Sena and replaced Shubha Raul as the city mayor.

This is the second time when the mayor was elected by raising of hands and not by secret ballot.

Sena's Versova corporator Chaya Bhanji, reported 'missing' for the past 48 hours, was present during polling at the BMC headquarters.

With the Samajwadi Party deciding to stay away and the MNS corporators remaining absent, the Congress plan to score a hat-trick of victories, after defeating the saffron alliance in the Lok Sabha and assembly elections, came a cropper.

The victory has also given a new lease of life for the saffron alliance, specially the Shiv Sena. BJP's Shailaja Girkar was elected deputy mayor.

Dubai World in Debt Talks on $26 Billion, Rest Stable

Dubai World began talks with banks to restructure $26 billion of debt, including $3.5 billion owed by property unit Nakheel, and said the remainder of its liabilities are on “a stable financial footing.”

Debt from subsidiaries including Infinity World Holding, Istithmar World and Ports & Free Zone World will be excluded from the negotiations, Dubai World, one of the emirate’s three main state-related holding companies, said in a statement. The cost to protect Dubai debt against default fell to the lowest since Nov. 25. Dubai’s main equity index dropped 6.6 percent.

Dubai is seeking to delay payments on less than half its $59 billion of liabilities, easing the potential damage to banks recovering from $1.7 trillion of losses and writedowns from the global crisis. Shares worldwide recovered some of the losses suffered since Dubai announced it would seek a “standstill” agreement on all of Dubai World’s debt as the Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 600 gained 1.2 percent and the MSCI Emerging Markets Index showed the first back-to-back gains in two weeks.

“Now that they’re saying $26 billion, it reduces some of the panic that built up in the last few days,” said Nick Chamie, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets in Toronto. “This is positive. The market was feeding on its own concern and there were talks of $60 billion debt that would need to be restructured.”

Dubai’s ruler and United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum said the world misunderstood the government’s intention when it said state-run holding company Dubai World would renegotiate debt repayments, according to Al Arabiya television today.

‘Minor Problem’

The debt Dubai World plans to restructure includes about $6 billion of Islamic bonds sold by Nakheel, according to the Dubai World statement today.

“Initial discussions have commenced with the banks of Dubai World and are proceeding on a constructive basis,” Dubai World said in the statement. “It is envisaged the restructuring process will be carried out in an equitable way for the overall benefit of all stakeholders.”

Shares worldwide have been rebounding after Europe suffered its biggest one-day stock market slump since April last week on investor concern Dubai’s debt delay might cause the biggest emerging-market default since Argentina in 2001.

The $26 billion figure “confirms that it’s a relatively minor problem,” said Michael Atkin, who helps oversee $10 billion in fixed-income assets as head of sovereign research at Putnam Investments in Boston. The country’s struggles serve as a “reminder that we’re not yet out of the woods in the global financial system. It raises the issue of what else is out there,” he said.

Negotiations

Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc was the biggest underwriter of Dubai World loans while HSBC Holdings Plc has the most at risk in the U.A.E., according to JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Banks have begun negotiating with Dubai World because they “are wary of any alternative including calling Dubai World in default,” said Hani Sabra, associate covering the Middle East for New York-based research firm Eurasia Group.

Spokespeople for RBS and HSBC declined to comment.

The United Arab Emirates’ central bank said Nov. 29 it “stands behind” the country’s local and foreign banks and offered them access to more money under a new facility. U.A.E. Central Bank Governor Sultan Al-Suwaidi told Abu Dhabi TV yesterday there was “no need to worry” about lenders in the Persian Gulf nation.

Default Swaps

The cost of protecting against a default by Dubai fell 53 basis points to 517, extending yesterday’s first decline in a week, according to credit-default swap prices from CMA Datavision. Default swaps for Abu Dhabi narrowed 9.5 basis points to 130.5 and contracts linked to DP World Ltd. dropped 63.5 basis points to 580.

The contracts, which fall as perceptions of credit quality improve, pay the buyer face value in exchange for the underlying securities or the cash equivalent should a borrower fail to adhere to its debt agreements. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point and is equivalent to $1,000 a year on a contract protecting $10 million of debt.

Shares in the emirates fell with Abu Dhabi’s measure wiping out its gains since May and poised for a record 13 percent two- day slump. The Dubai Financial Market index dropped 6.6 percent, heading for its steepest back-to-back decline in more than a year. Qatar’s DSM20 Index lost as much as 9.3 percent and the Kuwait Stock Exchange fell 2.6 percent in their first trading day since the Nov. 25 restructuring announcement.

Support Fund

The Dubai government said Nov. 25 its Financial Support Fund will spearhead the workout for Dubai World and named Aidan Birkett of Deloitte LLP as its chief restructuring officer. The government said Dubai World would seek an extension of loan maturities until at least May 30, 2010.

Bondholders of Nakheel PJSC, whose Islamic bond is due Dec. 14, have formed a creditor group that represents more than 25 percent of the debt, said Jo Shepherd, head of public relations at Ashurst LLC, which was appointed legal adviser. The group is considering its options, Shepherd said in an interview late yesterday. More than 75 percent consent from creditors is needed to approve extraordinary resolutions.

The Nakheel 3.17 percent bonds, known as sukuk, headed for the biggest gain in six weeks, rising to 58.5 cents on the dollar from 58 cents, according to Citigroup Inc. prices on Bloomberg. The bonds, governed by Shariah laws barring investors from profiting from the exchange of money, traded for 110.5 cents on Nov. 23 and as low as 42 cents on the dollar Nov. 27.

Creditor Incentive

“Even though it is going to be tough to restructure $26 billion of debt, Dubai World’s creditors have an incentive to do so in order to reduce the haircut that they will have to take,” said Rachel Ziemba, a senior analyst covering sovereign wealth funds at Roubini Global Economics, a New York-based research firm. “Time is short but they might still avoid defaulting on Nakheel’s $3.5 billion bonds due on Dec. 14.”

Dubai’s government told creditors of Dubai World yesterday that they should help in a restructuring the holding company because it hasn’t guaranteed the debt.

“The lenders should bear part of the responsibility,” the director general of the emirate’s finance department, Abdulrahman Al Saleh, said on state-run Dubai TV. The government’s Nov. 25 decision to seek a halt Dubai World’s debt payments is “in the interest of all parties, the investors the creditors and the contractors,” he said.

Housing Slump

Dubai, the second-biggest of seven emirates that make up the U.A.E., and its state-owned companies borrowed $80 billion to fund a boom in growth and diversify the economy. The global financial turmoil and a decline in property prices hurt companies such as Dubai World as they struggled to raise loans.

The company received financing based on the “viability of its projects, not on government guarantees,” Al Saleh said.

Home prices in Dubai plummeted 47 percent in the second quarter from a year ago, the steepest drop of any market, according to Knight Frank LLC. Property prices may slide further, a survey by Colliers International showed Oct. 14.

Istithmar World, Dubai World’s investment unit, bought New York luxury retailer Barneys in 2007 for $942.3 million. Dubai World agreed in 2008 to invest about $5.1 billion in U.S. casino company MGM Mirage as part of a plan to diversify the emirate’s economy into entertainment and financial services.

Infinity World is a special purpose vehicle to buy Dubai World’s stake in U.S. casino company MGM Mirage in 2007. Ports & Free Zone World owns DP World Ltd., Economic Zones World, P&O Ferries and Jebel Ali Free Zone.

$5 Billion Borrowed

Dubai, home to the world’s tallest tower, set up a $20 billion Dubai Financial Support Fund after the seizure in credit markets. Dubai said Nov. 25 it borrowed $5 billion from Abu Dhabi government-controlled banks for the fund, after raising $10 billion by selling bonds to the U.A.E. central bank in February.

Dubai’s government raised $1.93 billion in October from the biggest sale of Islamic bonds from the Gulf Arab region this year, and paid off a $1 billion Dubai Civil Aviation Authority sukuk due Nov. 4. The sheikhdom and its state-owned companies have to repay $9.2 billion of bonds and loans maturing in 2010, $19.8 billion in 2011 and $17.3 billion in the following year, Deutsche Bank AG said in report in August.

Istithmar World breached covenants on two loans backed by London’s Adelphi office building on Oct. 19, the issuer said in a statement yesterday.

Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s cut their ratings on Dubai state companies, saying they may consider Dubai World’s plan to delay payments a default.

“The times of implicit support are clearly over,” said Philipp Lotter, vice-president of Moody’s Investors Service in Dubai. “In the past, entities such as Dubai World certainly represented themselves as quasi-government entities, whereas there was no legal obligation on behalf of the government to support, and that has certainly shifted with last week’s announcement.”
